Regulated Medical Waste Program

The Regulated Medical Waste Program has oversight for proper storage, treatment and disposal of medical waste produced by hospitals, residential health care facilities, diagnostic and treatment centers (see section 2801 of the Public Health Law) and clinical laboratories (see section 571 of the Public Health Law).

The Regulated Medical Waste Program reviews and approves the following for Article 28 facilities and clinical laboratories:

  • Waste Management Plans
  • Autoclave Operation Plans
  • Alternative Technologies Operation Plans

The Program also reviews and approves manufacturers' applications for the use of new alternative regulated waste treatment systems.

To better ensure the safety of the public and health care workers from the potential dangers posed by regulated medical waste, the Regulated Medical Waste Program provides guidance and standards of proper medical waste practices to all State licensed health care facilities.
