Q: Are laboratories required to submit specimens to the Parasitology Laboratory?
A: Yes. For New York State patients, laboratories are required to submit specimens that test positive for Babesia species, Cryptosporidium species, Cyclospora cayetanensis, Entamoeba histolytica/dispar, and any Plasmodium species. Please refer to the Laboratory Services page for the most current Laboratory Reporting of Communicable Diseases Guide for more information.
Q: Can specimens for organisms other than those in the Laboratory Reporting of Communicable Disease Guide be submitted?
A: Yes, the Parasitology Laboratory is a public health reference laboratory for all parasitic diseases detected or suspected in patients who are residents of New York State.
Q: Can anyone submit a sample?
A: No, the Parasitology Laboratory only accepts samples from permitted laboratories or licensed physicians.
Q: Do I need to fill out specific paperwork to get a sample analyzed?
A: Yes, samples are only accepted if they are accompanied by a completed IDR (Infectious Diseases Requisition) form. Please see the Laboratory Services [1]page to determine whether an additional NPL (Non-Permitted Laboratory Test Request) form is necessary. Both forms are found on the Laboratory Services page.
Q: How long does it take to get results?
A: Many results are reported within 1-2 days of sample receipt. If circumstances require a quicker response please call the Parasitology Laboratory 518-474-4177.
