The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases, with support from the Mycoses Study Group Education and Research Consortium and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, hosted a 2025 Scientific Meeting on Candida auris in Miami, Florida from June 5-6, 2025.
Dr. Sudha Chaturvedi presented on large-scale clinical surveillance strategies, genomic epidemiology, and the progress made in addressing the unprecedented outbreak of C. auris in New York and the Northeast United States. C. auris is an emerging fungal pathogen worldwide that is highly resistant to treatment. Dr. Chaturvedi’s laboratory has been a leader in developing rapid molecular diagnostic tests for detecting C. auris from surveillance samples, identifying the pathogen in yeast isolates, and detecting echinocandin resistance, a first-line drug for treating invasive infections.
The meeting, which drew a diverse audience including medical students, healthcare staff, and researchers from clinical, basic, and public health laboratories, underscored the practical applications of the research and its potential to improve patient care.
