Inorganic Analytical Chemistry

Inorganic Analytical Chemistry is a core component of the Laboratory of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry with diverse responsibilities that encompass the measurement of various inorganic contaminants in water, air, solid waste, and food, as well as the analysis of biological tissues and fluids (blood, urine, bone) for toxic metals/metalloids.  The analysis of environmental samples is conducted under appropriate regulatory standards: NYS DOH ELAP – Lab ID 10762: NELAP – E37911; and EPA Lab ID – NY00005, while the analysis of clinical specimens is carried out under CLIA 33D0654341.

Specific areas of public health expertise include Asbestos, Childhood Lead Poisoning, Sanitary Chemistry and Trace Elements. The laboratory also provides support for several emergency response programs including participation as a Level 1 laboratory in the CDC’s Laboratory Response Network for chemical agents (LRN-C). The laboratory operates a proficiency-testing program for US-based State Public Health laboratories on behalf of the CDC’s LRN-C program for trace elements in urine and for a lewisite metabolite.
