Research Projects:
- Develop RNA based detection assays, such as transcription-mediated amplification for increased sensitivity and multiplex detection of parasites in complex specimens
- Use of MALDI –TOF and next generation sequencing for species identification in parasitology
- Generate a high resolution cryo-electron microscopy map of cytoplasmic ribosomes purified from Trypanosoma brucei
- Develop a nucleic acid amplification based assay to differentiate Entamoeba histolytica from Entamoeba dispar in stool samples and to detect Entamoeba histolytica in liver specimens
- Helminth identification utilizing conventional PCR and sequencing to aid in identification of helminth specimens; cytochrome oxidase I gene (also used in the Barcode of Life Database) is the most commonly used gene target
- Pyrosequence to detect genetic mutations that are causal for, or associated with, drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum and to evaluate the resistance patterns associated with specific populations or geographic locations
